By Lance Winslow Having traveled to every city in this county over 10,000 population and having set up franchises in 23 states and having had to deal in each market with labor issues. Issues of all types; High Unemployment, Low unemployment, OSHA Issues, Insurance Issues, Health Insurance Issues, Substance Abuse Issues of the young adults ages 18-28 and some times up to 40 years of age; I have seen things and heard stories about the reality of the working force. I can therefore state my observations as real issues and not by academia white paper. These are real issues folks and issues we must address for the welfare and safety of our Nation, our future Health Care Costs, the sanctity of future generations and the work ethic necessary for this country to continue to new heights. Help Want Ads in News Papers across the country yield few quality applicants. In many towns there are small businesses, which cannot get the labor they need. They need people and have work. But unfortunately through no part of their own, the labor supply is very under whelming, from work ethic to issues associated with lower and lower middle class drugs. In the $5.75 to $12.00 range it is nearly impossible to get good labor willing to work. And those middle and upper middle spoiled kids who do not feel it is their duty to put in and give a fair days work for a fair days pay are the norm in that range of demographic although there are some diligent parents out there who have raised their kids correctly and those kids do show up on time, work hard and make us all very proud. The poor Small Business owner in this country spends countless hours training people only to have them quit due to a perception of a buyers market when it comes to labor and they demand respect without fulfilling the promises of the hand shake associated with employment. Starbucks has a pretty low turnover considering, but it is still 50% per year. Most QSRs are hovering well over 85%-90%. Many small business owners fear retribution for firing anyone and puts up with abuses by head strong young adult labor who obviously do not care, barely put forth efforts and expect to be paid whether or not they show up on time or even put in the basic productivity to complete the assignment for which that small business derives money. Why? Perhaps I might give you some insight. They do not care. Why? Their answer, why should I, the business owner is making all the money and the fat cat. Business owners are all bad. Says who? Well the mass media, Elliot Spitzer and now the whole society believes it? Many of the young teen employees, which earn minimum wage up to $12.00 hr seem expect and want free everything, benefits and care little about the actual business models productivity or customer service? Little sense of responsibility or real work ethic. Part of the problem is that many of these people are routinely doing recreational drugs. I would say in that wage price category 28% to 33% do recreational drugs and/or are regular drug users and whether or not the others end up eventually doing drugs, the drug user workers available for hire do and they lower the bar of acceptability to all businesses. It is for this reason that many good workers who would produce the productivity do not because it is not expected or required. Those therefore who put forth minimal effort are rewarded teaching others to do the minimal to be considered on the good list. But in actuality you have lowered the standard of basic human honesty and integrity. You have broken the unspoken laws of achievement. All children, teens and young adults should try the best in everything that they do. We must keep expectations high. Unfortunately, we do not teach this do we as well as we could? Not in schools, not in work or at home. There are some parents who believe that kids soccer should not keep score? Why not? That is taking socialism to a whole other level. Working hard in practice to achieve teaches us to work harder to gain. If everyone is owed a paycheck without effort, then no effort will happen and no task completed to the expectation of the customer. These same kids or young adults as consumers are ultra demanding, yet when they are at work, they do not put forth. This is your basic “ME” attitude and although some psychologists say that is an innate tendency of the species, but is this acceptable? For a large society working together for the common good we must solve this teen drug dilemma. Surely more and more businesses will be forced to find non-English speaking labor and robotics to accomplish tasks. Yet if the consumers who are demanding services are also the workers at other businesses then no one will work, because the expectation of service is gone out the window and everyone will get lousy service, poor workmanship forcing business to go robotic or close. Today we observed the results of a recent newspaper want ad for labor and found that of the 20 people replying only 4 showed up for interviews. Three of which had no chance of working for us. One was demanding more pay before showing us even one hour of work. The one we hired lasted until 10 Am saying the work was too hard. Well, I am so sorry, what did you expect? It’s work. The same person complained to us about his apartment costs, pregnant girlfriend and other issues. He was wondering if we could pay him for the rest of the week in advance, truly pathetic. Then we recently fired a guy, which he had three kids with girls in other states and three kids from a previous marriage. He was 21, surely this guy can figure out more than illegitimate gene-pool work. Because let me tell you he didn’t work worth a darn. The drug issues are serious in nearly every market we operate now, much worse than 10 years ago. Now it is as if 20% of the kids do not have drivers licenses, 30% use drugs often and 10% are out of it, not even good for three work days in a row? I would rather train chimpanzees, some probably speak just about as good of English as those we might replace these kids with. Many times colleges and Universities will have labor available and most heavy drug users wash out of college so you have a better pool, but even so many are spoiled and are not of an ethical nature or even care about completing a project. I wonder how much cheating and palagerism is going on at those colleges. Most of the College kids are good, but also limited to hours of availability. Churches often work for finding good workers adn those of a more solid character. For instance the LDS church has an employment person at each stake center. Other local churches in many areas are good, but often cannot fulfill the needed labor requirements. We pay much more than a Wal-Mart, Starbucks, Blockbuster or McDonalds, but with entry level workers Health Insurance is out of the questions since the workers will probably be there less than the 3 months probationary period. Although many employees will be with us for years. But labor is an issue, quality labor and we are doing our part trying to put Americans back to work, but we cannot lead a horse to water so we can only put those to work who are not looking for free fish or a free handout. This is a real issue and these issues effect every business man, something needs to be done. But even more serious will be these kids when they get older and take those work habits into the future and their health problems. We may see early mid 30’s and 40’s heart attacks. This will significantly drive up costs as those who do drugs do not generally have high paying jobs and will not have the proper coverages to pay for it, so society has to pay. If we fail to fix the problem then we will pay for it in the future 10-fold. We are paying now, if you stop and get to know some of these young people. A Primer on Hypertufa

You can read the article about mixes to find out how to make it. It is fun to play with. You can shape it, file it, form it, add to it the next day as long as you do not let it dry out. (just cover with a piece of plastic) It can withstand the coldest winters and loves the rain. The longer you have it the more character it gains. If you want to make something big, this is the stuff to use. It is not waterproof so no ponds. You can try to seal it but would be better off to use concrete. It would be cheaper and far less aggravation. You can use it for fountains that do not have to hold water. What I mean is that the water will not be sitting in, just passing through. It is relatively light compared to concrete so makes great trough style planters. If you have ever wanted to make a “Giant Head” statue it is great for this because you can take your time molding and add to it as you see your statue taking shape. If you do not like what you see, it is easy to knock off a bit and change it. When you are done it will, unless it is 3 or 4 feet high, be possible to move it without a forklift or crane. Like the natural Tufa, it supports the growth of Moss and Lichen. This gives it an aged look in one growing season. Once you get started with this you will be hooked. It is great for use in molds, you mix as usual and press it into the mold. In a couple of days, when it is cured, you can take it out and you will have a light, textured looking casting. Cell Phone: The Past, the Present and the Future

You left something you definitely can’t go out without! Is it your wallet? Well, that may top the list, but what comes next is indisputable - your cell phone. MOst adults nowadays have a cell phone. This is one of the needs that the modern world now has. And with all of the innovations that now flood the market, sometimes you are dazzled at how far the cell phone technology has gone. The cell phone could be traced as far back as 1947 when the researchers observed the use of car phones. So, technically speaking, the crudest form of cell phone was the first mobile car phone. And in a way, a cell phone is much like a two-way radio. In the past, there was a massive community of mobile radio users who sort of popularized the technology that would give birth to the modern cell phone. Back then, these researchers thought that they could develop a more ‘mobile’ phone by the use of small cells but The Federal Communications Commission would not free the airwaves - yet. AT&T wanted to develop the technology but FCC limited the frequencies. The development of cell phones had to be shelved. It was not until 1968 that the FCC reconsidered everything. They proposed a challenge that when a mobile phone system that really works is introduced, then they would increase the allocation of frequencies. It did work and the rest, as the saying goes, is history. Although the history of the cell phone could be attested to this, perhaps the first known inventor of a mobile handset was Dr. Martin Cooper. Cooper worked for Motorola as a General Manager for the Systems Division and was able to develop the cell phone technology along with this colleagues Richard W. Dronsuth, Albert J. Mikulski, Charles N. Lynk, Jr., James J. Mikulski, John F. Mitchell, Roy A. Richardson and John A. Sangster. Although it is Dr Cooper who is widely recognized for fathering the cell phone usage, it wasn’t entirely an original idea of his. His rival, Joel Engel who was then the head of the researches at AT&T Bell Labs was the first to develop the electronic components of cellular technology. It was in 1973 that the first cell phone call was made. Despite the demand for this type of technology, it took 37 years before the United States had commercial availability. By 1987, there was a bottleneck of communication. The users were simply too numerous for the existing allowed frequencies. There are 3 known generations to the cellular technology: The First Generation - the first mobile phone to make contact was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X. This was a development from the same phone that Dr Cooper used to make the historical ‘first cell phone call’. It was in the 1980’s that cell phones made use of networks with several closely located base stations. Analog systems were then used. Back then, mobile phones were more like ‘car phones’ basing on the size and the use of the gadgets. Not long after, these car phones were designed to fit a carrier the size of a briefcase. This innovation made the phones become more mobile’. The Second Generation - the second wave presented the introduction of GSM cell phones. The very first digital cell phone was introduced in the United States in 1990. Europe followed with the establishment of a digital network in 1991. The Third Generation - or what is popularly called the 3G. This paved the way for the development of such technologies as live streams of television and radio feeds. These are just two of the many known developments that we have today. Now that you know where your cell phone originated from and what it can offer you now, the next thing to know would probably be the future. It is currently predicted that by the year 2010, wirelines will be near extinction and cell phones will take over. Another forecast is that overseas calls would be uninterrupted and that would be made possible by the massive development on reception and areas of coverage. And guess what? Tough Love Tips if You Have 10 Pounds to Lose

By Greg Cryns My sales manager used to tell me You must learn to walk before you can run. At first I was offended by his statement. After all, I was 22 years old and I was smart! However, over the years those wise words have helped me be successful in many endeavors in life, both big and small. Apply this philosophy if you have 10 pounds to lose. Even if you could stand to lose 50 pounds, think of the weight loss in 10-pound increments. Beginning with a baby step weight loss program will increase your chances to lose more weight. Tell yourself I have 10 pounds to lose and set you goal at that number. Since the first 10 pounds are often mostly made up of water, you should be able to achieve the goal of 10 pounds to lose in a short time. Doing so will give you a great sense of accomplishment and joy and this will help propel you to on your journey of another 10 pounds to lose. Eating Habits Start your weight loss program by thinking about your eating habits. How many meals do you eat every day? Many nutritionists recommend that you eat MORE meals. The theory here is that to lose weight you need to increase your metabolism. If you consume one or two meals per day you will actually slow down your metabolism. Eat four to six small meals a day instead. Eliminate the desire for junk food I love taco chips. I also love myself. One has to go. Get rid of junk food from your diet. I find that when I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and do some exercise my craving for junk food usually disappears. My vegetarian friends tell me they have no craving for meat any more. I quit smoking three years ago and that terrible craving went away after a month. Get the picture? Get your metabolism into gear! The equation goes like this: Increased metabolism = fat loss Its not easy to lose fat from your body if your metabolism is always low. You need to find out ways to increase that metabolism. Get that lazy body moving! Work up a bit of sweat. I recommend that you try lifting weights. Sound awful? Just try it. I promise the experience will not be as painful as you first imagined. It could actually turn into a pleasurable and fat-losing experience for you! Lifting weights will increase your cardio and this, in turn, will burn off ugly fat. If you cannot lift weights, try Yoga. Yoga has a side benefit: peace of mind. You get two goals with one effort. Walking is a great pastime but it is not especially good exercise in a weight loss regime. My friend told me he get into a walking program of a fast three miles a day. After a month of that he gained three pounds. Ugh! I have similar experience with walking. It might be a very pleasurable and worthy experience, but I did not lose weight that way. The problem is, I think, that it is difficult to get the cardio effect. I work on my computer all day long. This is a terrific way to gain a lot of weight. My metabolism is always low when I am sitting down. I can FEEL it. To counteract this I will get up and walk a couple of hundred yards every half hour. Baby steps to a greater goal. Drink enough water Drink at least 64 ounces of water each day. Your body must get rid of water before it loses fat. If we are dehydrated we hold back releasing water from our system. Dehydration increases the chance of losing muscle tone. This also decreases your metabolism and puts a dent in your weight loss desire. Having said that, drinking too much water is proven to be inefficient or even dangerous. 5 Fitness & Nutrition Tips for More Weight Loss

By Craig Ballantyne Here are 5 fitness and nutrition tips to help you with your weight loss program. Follow these and you’ll boost your metabolism and burn more fat. What would I do if I were you? If I were you and I wanted to lose the fat I gained over the holiday break…whether it’s 3 pounds, 10 pounds, or 20 pounds or more…so, here’s what I would do if I were you… 1 - I’d return to the program that has worked best for me in the past. So let’s say that my best fat loss ever was 8 pounds in 4 weeks last summer…when I was eating right and doing 3 total body workouts per week followed by intervals. Then I’d simply get right back on that program, pronto. Don’t worry about trying to set up some fancy program based on this research or that, just get back to what worked before. 2 - I’d drink six cups of Green Tea per day and 3.5grams of Omega-3 fatty acids per day (I’d get this from eating fish or from fish oil supplements). I’d eat at least 6 servings of vegetables per day and 6 servings of fruit. I’d snack on almonds. I’d eat only lean protein sources. Etc. Etc. And this is what I do, everyday. Maybe some pizza on the weekend, but other than that, stick to the plan. 3 - I’d do only the exercises that I hated…as long as I hate them because they are hard. For me, that’s squats, dumbbell rows, split squats, and other big muscle-group exercises. Just thinking about those exercises jacks up my metabolism. For many people, chin-ups are a major challenge…and let’s face it, they are a total body exercise if done right. In fact, all of the major exercises in the strength and interval workouts are “total-body exercises”. If you don’t think that chin-ups and DB rows are total body exercises, then you aren’t doing them to their full capacity. Maybe you don’t have the total body muscle control to work your whole body with these exercises. If you’re confused by what I wrote, go ask a truly experienced lifter, in person, and they should be able to show you how you can make all lifts “total body exercises”. 4 - I’d add more bodyweight exercises to my training schedule. Bodyweight workouts won’t cause too much soreness, but they will allow you to give your body more metabolic turbulence, meaning more fat loss and more calories burned. And you don’t have to drive to the gym to do these. In fact, you could probably get a total-body, bodyweight workout done in the time it takes you to get to the gym and back. 5 - I’d keep trying to get stronger. Training to get strong causes the greatest metabolic response in your body. That means, in less geeky language, that your body will burn more calories, and ultimately more fat, when you train to get stronger. No more la-dee-daing and farting around with the high reps, low weight stuff. Leave that to the bad workout videos from the ’80s. The Art of Seduction

That scene became one of the most memorable moments in entertainment history and is only one of the thousands seduction scenes we see in movies today. The thing is what they do in the movies, you can also do in real life. But before you exert any effort, you have to make sure that the person you are going to seduce deserves it. Trust your instincts. Is he or she worth seducing? Before you seduce anybody, make sure that you are confident. Are you happy with how you look and how you dress? How are you in making conversation? If you have a couple of problems in those areas, work on it first. If you feel confident with your looks, your brains and your skills, then that’s when you start seducing. Seduction can come in any form. It can be through eye contact or during conversations. First, eye contact. Just by looking at a person with a ‘come hither’ expression, if he or she is not dense, then you will be able to get your point across. Next, conversation. How much of it should be about you and about the other person? If you talk about yourself, choose some areas that could boost you to him or her? If you ride horses, bring that up, then leave some to the imagination. For some, the excitement from seduction is more on the chase. It is the thrill you get in enticing that person to come to you. Look at their eyes. Eyes are not only the mirrors to one’s soul. It could also be the mirrors to one’s heart or loin. Whichever, eyes are the give-away if he or she is into you. Trust your instincts. Compare how he or she talks to you? Is it different from how he or she talks to others? Flirt - but not too much. When seducing our subjects, flirting is necessary. But once we go overboard - it can be a turn-off, especially if women do the first move. However, a man still wants to be re-assured that a woman is interested. It will only encourage him to pursue her more. For women, play ‘getable-when-worked-for’ instead of ‘hard-to-get.’ You have to get your intentions clear. If the attraction is just sex, then let it be just about sex. No strings attached. But if a party (most of the time, it’s the woman) wants to bring it up to another level, then it is better to talk about it. Seduction is also a two-way street. If one of you is not interested, then the other may be rejected. But if there is hope to this flirtation, then surrender. Give in to your pleasures and act out those desires. Engagements - A Short History

In the Anglo-American tradition, an engagement ring is a ring worn by a woman on her left-hand ring finger indicating her engagement to be married. By modern convention, the ring is usually presented as a betrothal gift by a man to his prospective bride while or directly after she accepts his marriage proposal. It represents a formal agreement to chastity and a future marriage. The tradition of wearing an engagement ring is thought to date bake to Roman times when it was thought that the fourth finger of the left hand was the vena amoris (vein of love) leading directly to the heart. Rings of this nature have been found dating back as far as 4 AD. That said the origin of the engagement ring is still a cause for debate. One trend of thought is that the ring evolved from slave shackles, the ring symbolising the future bondage of husband and wife. The concept of an engagement period can be traced to 1215 when at the Fourth Lateran Council Pope Innocent III declared a longer waiting period between betrothal and marriage. Do you feel like you come up empty each time, or even worse- end up repeating an old pattern with the same type of person again and again? Its an uncomfortable reality for so many of us as we look to be in a relationship with someone. Our requirements may be unconsciously stemming from old emotional patterns within our psyche. Those patterns may have been formulated in early childhood, during puberty, or even from our first love. Each time we grow into a new relationship, we hope that we have learned enough from the sum of our previous experiences to say that we are prepared to reap the harvest of our true partner. Unfortunately, if unfinished business still resides within your mind and heart, it will eventually surface in the new relationship. Recently one of my clients came to me with this same trouble. She had recently found a wonderful new relationship, or shall we say it found her. Everything was going so well, they were getting to know each other and really felt committed to each other. Then, it happened. She started getting angry. She had a sharp edge to her voice and was quick tempered with people. It was like she had her claws out. She was so happy- what could be wrong? Well, she was happy. She was so happy in fact, that she was feeling safer than she had in years. Thats a good thing, right? Of course it is. It means that the safety made her feel comfortable enough to let down the walls around her heart and the old heart wounds were starting to pour out- all over the place. She was safe enough to allow herself to be vulnerable. In that vulnerability she had given herself permission to let go of the old pain, hoping to make way for the new love her heart was beginning to feel for her partner. It was a wonderful step forward! What happened next? When we talked about her anger and we made the connection that she was protecting some very old pain and wounding, she began to drop the anger and connected to the sadness. She went through a period of grieving and during that time, was able to talk with her partner about the old wounding. It actually resulted in bringing them closer together. They had crossed a threshold in their relationship, taking it to a new spiritual level. Now, they both feel as if they are headed toward a true partnership. How did they get this far? They trusted each other. They also trusted in themselves enough to know that the old wounding was in fact something very old. They are able to bear witness to the pain as it was being released, and it made the bond between them stronger, knowing they could unite in the face of grief and pain. It opened the door into their hearts a little wider because they were healing consciously. What steps do we take to find a true partner? We start with our self. Until we can be a true partner to our own feelings, we do not know how to be a partner to someone else. If we are not willing to face our own vulnerability and our past wounds, how can we face them in another? True partnership is not all champagne and roses. Its not stories about soft fuzzy bunnies and breakfast in bed every morning. True partnership is about being there for another person during their high times and even their low times. It is about being real with your self and with the other person. We all have emotional patterns, some leftover baggage and none of us wake up out of bed with perfect hair and makeup. We are human beings living human experiences. Finding someone who will be a true partner to you in that reality means facing that same reality in yourself first.
